In an emotion-filled post, Cavil took to Instagram to inform fans that he would be ending his run as the character Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s “The Witcher” after season 4

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” the 39-year-old announced over the weekend.
Allaying the fear of fans who had thought that his departure implied the end of the series, Cavill shared that “The Hunger Games” alum Hemsworth will be taking over the role.

He added, “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

He penned, “As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.”

The actor then acknowledged that he was excited to take on the part despite knowing living up to Cavil’s persona might be a tough nut to crack.

He continued, “Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

For two seasons in the Netflix series, Cavill starred as Geralt, a muscular monster hunter with silver hair and alluring looks. With his sword and magic as his weapons of destruction, his character navigated the medieval-inspired landmass known as the Continent, killing unique beasts and saving villages and kingdoms.

The first season, which consisted of eight episodes, was released on Netflix on December 20, 2019—the second season also had a similar number of episodes, debuting on December 17, 2021. Both seasons received critical acclaim, spurring Netflix to greenlight a third installment for the series.

The third season, which will debut in mid-2023, will see Cavill reprising the role for the final time, joined by lead actresses Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan alongside a slew of talented cast members.

While a trailer for the third season has yet to be released, Netflix did share the official plot summary on Twitter, giving insight into what fans should expect when the series debuts.

From the announcement, it’s clear that Geralt and Ciri would be hunted by several known and unknown forces as the warrior hunter starts training the former princess to use her magic after reuniting at the end of season two. The pair will also have the quarter-elf witch, Yennefer, played by Cholatra, as an ally.

The synopsis read in part, “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it….They must fight back, put everything on the line or risk losing each other forever.”
