‘Modern Family’: Jesse Tyler Ferguson Officiated Sarah Hyland’s Wedding

Jesse Tyler Ferguson has shared new details just a week after Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams‘ intimate wedding.

The 46-year-old, who portrayed Hyland’s uncle Mitchell Pritchett in “Modern Family,” brought some part of his fun-loving role to life at the actress’ wedding. He was the officiant for his 31-year-old co-star and her 38-year-old husband during their wedding. Ferguson revealed this during a special screening of his upcoming Netflix project, “Ivy + Bean,” on Monday.

Playing the role of family members for 11 years is no small feat, as characters of “Modern Family” have proven. The TV family has often shown how involved they are with one another, and they did it again when Hyland — who played Hailey Dunphy on the show — got married.

As it turned out, Ferguson served as the officiant at the intimate ceremony even though he was not originally slated to handle it. Ty Burrell, Hyland’s TV dad, was supposed to officiate the affair. Recounting what happened to ET‘s Lauren Zima, Ferguson said:

“I don’t know if people know this, but Ty Burrell was meant to do it, and there was a family emergency. So, I got a phone call 12 days before the wedding, and that’s why Ty wasn’t there, he had stuff going on.”

Although a handful of “Modern Family” stars attended the couple’s Santa Barbara nuptials — including Nolan Gould and Sofia Vergara, the Primetime Emmy Award nominee pointed out that not everybody could make it. The father-of-one clarified that although not everyone was in attendance, they all got an invite.

Ferguson also highlighted that he panicked about officiating the ceremony because “it’s going to be a wedding, and it’s going to be in Vogue magazine, and there’s also going to be paparazzi shots of me from a helicopter, officiating, no pressure.” Luckily, Ferguson could lean on Burrell for some pointers for his first time as an officiant.

The TV in-laws had no problem cross-referencing notes and coming up with what worked best for Hyland’s big day. As far as the “Take Me Out” actor was concerned, it was an “honor” to do it, and he was more than happy to understudy Burrell. Ferguson had nothing to worry about as he smashed his role in front of the almost 200 guests in attendance on August 20.

Hyland and Adams were initially slated to get married on August 8, 2020, but could not due to the rampant spread of the coronavirus. According to The Blast, the actress hinted that something huge would happen soon when she posted two black-and-white pictures of herself and her husband on Instagram

The image showed the couple on a lonely dirt road holding hands and then laughing deliriously. While Hyland rocked a short fringe dress, her beau wore a white shirt, suit, and trousers. His tie was placed carelessly around his shoulders. In the caption, the Manhattan-born star wrote:

“8.8.20 2 years of would be marriage bliss. I Love You to Pluto and Back. Let’s make it official already”

Years after Adam’s slid into “The Bachelorette” alum’s DMs, the pair has disclosed what food brought them closer together. The Blast reported in July that Hyland made the revelation when she appeared on an episode of “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”

As a supportive beau, Adams made two posts about his future wife’s appearance on the hit show. While the first urged fans to ensure they saw the program, the second was a snippet of Fallon’s conversation with the screen goddess. In the video, the “Blind Date” actress explained her and her then-fiancé’s connection to bologna. To get things rolling, Fallon displayed a screenshot of a 2017 chat between Hyland and Adams when they were still dating.

Apparently, Adams had just discovered that his then-girlfriend loved bologna just as he did, and that discovery led him to make a grand promise to marry her. Of course, the “Private Parts” actress did not believe him, so she told him he was “full of bologna” and took a screenshot of the conversation.

Hyland told Fallon that she took the screenshot as proof — in case he did not follow through on his words. The clip ended with the TV host surprising her with a basket of bologna as a congratulatory gift for possibly walking down the aisle soon.
