It’s time to break out the black eyeliner and studded belts once again!
Las Vegas’ immensely popular ‘When We Were Young’ festival began answering musical festival devotees’ prayers for a ’emo’tional weekend, celebrating emo and alternative music of their youth; many of the biggest names in 2000’s era alternative music were on the lineup of When We Were Young’s inaugural festival last October, and this year’s festival seems to be no different!
Yesterday, the promotional team behind the festival announced the 2023 lineup, in addition to revealing all of the need-to-know details about one of 2023’s most anticipated music festivals.
The Blast shared deets pertaining to last year’s festival, including the cancellation of When We Were Young’s first date due to inclement weather; needless to say, fan reaction was bleak.
Any sadness felt from last year’s first shelved date was soon forgotten, thanks to the weekend’s two shows that did go on!
Last year’s festival will soon be a distant memory; keep reading to find out the scoop on this year’s When We Were Young festival!
How Did Fans React When ‘When Were Young’ Festival Was First Announced?
The Blast’s coverage of last year’s festival contained a bit of history on the festival’s beginnings!
When the festival was initially announced in January of last year, and fans first caught a glimpse of the lineup, many flocked to social media to chat about the festival’s validity; the lineup of music megastars and beloved bands of the ’emo’ era seemed too good to be true!
In a piece from Vice, When We Were Young’s festival organizer, Live Nation, stepped forward to confirm the festival was indeed a real one and added that “Great artists take time and care to work with. Thankfully we have a lot of history with these artists and their teams trust our visions with this.” (via The Blast)
Live Nation’s giant role within the festival did not sit well with some fans; we examined the connection further in our coverage from last January.
Travis Scott’s 2021 Astroworld concert, which would later be remembered for the tragic deaths caused by the effects of a 50,000-person crowd surge, was put on by Live Nation. 10 people would lose their lives and an additional 300 more were injured at Astroworld.
The two festivals came up in social media conversation after When We Were Young’s initial announcement.
“i’m gonna be real with u guys,” a concerned fan would tweet, “after the whole astroworld incident a few months ago i think putting so many bands with huge fanbases in one place for a single day seems like a very questionable idea.”
“Y’all so ready to forget Live Nation was responsible for so many fatalities at Astroworld cuz they put together the screamo revivalists all star team festival,” another Twitter user chimed in.
“Not Live Nation trynna use the alt scene to pay their lawyer feeds after astroworld,” another tweeted with a laughing emoji.
The 2023 When We Were Young Festival Will Have An Additional Date!
Prospective and returning attendees can rejoice!
The ‘screamo revivalists all star team festival,’ as the aforementioned Twitter user called When We Were Young, will have an additional date for its 2023 festival. According to Alternative Press, the poster reads that a “2nd show [was] added,” on October 22nd!
For those fans who are stoked to hit up their local Hot Topic in anticipation, presale tickets for day two will be on sale tomorrow, February 24th, the outlet also stated. Attendees will also have a chance to snag general admission tickets as well. The former tickets will go on sale at 2PM PT/5PM EST, and “remaining tickets” will be available for the latter sale, beginning an hour later.
Green Day and Blink-182 have top billing on 2023’s poster! Other notable names include Good Charlotte, The Offspring, 30 Seconds To Mars, Yellowcard, and Rise Against.
When We Were Young’s official website includes pricing information for the available ticket packages. Those attendees who REALLY want to go all out will have the chance to do so with VIP packages and a “Hotel and ticket” package.
The 2023 When We Were Young festival will take place in Las Vegas on October 21st and 22nd!
